Four years ago I was a totally different person. I was overweight, struggled with chronic pain from fibromyalgia and was taking 12 prescription medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, GERD, anxiety, sleep problems and pain. The prescriptions left me feeling lethargic and in a fog most of the time. I had trouble moving and relied on my cane to walk.

Learning How to Eliminate Gluten

My daughters encouraged me to have a nutrition counseling appointment with Dar because I had been experiencing severe stomach issues. I had a lot of pain from IBS and was throwing up. Dar recommended that I eliminate gluten from my diet. At first, I simply replaced my usual foods with gluten free versions. Over time, I learned that gluten-free processed foods still contain unhealthy ingredients, even though they are gluten free. Eventually, I eliminated these products from my diet too.

I Learned How to Prepare Healthy Meals

Then, about a year ago, I enrolled in the Nutrition 4 Weight Loss Program with my daughter. The classes taught me great tips such as batch cooking—on the grill and using a crockpot—and how a glass of wine each night isn’t as innocent as it seems. I’m so thankful to Dar and my Nutrition 4 Weight Loss teacher, Angela, for all the things they taught me. I learned how to portion out healthy proteins, carbs and fats in my refrigerator and then assemble meals throughout the week so it’s easy for me to stay on track. I still meet with Dar occasionally for continued support as I get healthier.

I'm Off All Prescription Medication

I’ve now lost 70 pounds and I no longer need a cane to move around. It has been a treat to go into the regular women’s department to shop for clothes rather than the plus size section. Best of all, I’m off all the prescription medications I was taking. My blood pressure and cholesterol are normal, my arthritis has improved, I have better digestion, and I’m focused and energized. I work out five days per week at the gym doing weight-lifting routines, chair yoga classes and more. My doctor has been thrilled with my test results!

As I reminisce about my husband who passed away three years ago from cancer, I am even more motivated to take care of myself. This healthy lifestyle is a gift I’ve given to myself—to live a longer, happy, active life.
