4 Nutritionist-Approved Recipes for The 4th

Three-day weekend ahead! Along with all the sunshine, friends, family, swimming and fireworks, do you know what you're going to be eating? Chances are if you don't give this some forethought, the options aren't going to be great—sugary ice cream, sweetened condiments and corn-syrup-laden baked beans come to mind.
To keep you feeling great and fueling your body with real food, we've pulled together four of our favorite summertime recipes, perfect to bring to a BBQ or make in advance to bring up to the cabin.
Baked Beans
This is a brand new recipe, created by Brenna Thompson, MS, RD, LD. Brenna wanted her clients to know that sugary sweet, high fructose corn syrup heavy, baked beans straight from a can aren't the only option. Or even the better tasting option!
Grilled Peaches & Cream
We're all about eliminating the high fructose corn syrup in your summer fun, so say "no thanks" to the ice cream bars and enjoy these delicious grilled peaches and cream instead. Bonus points, guests will be wowed by this beautiful, rich dessert.
Lil' Dipper Veggie Dip
A longtime favorite, we just had to include it. The traditional store-bought veggie dip is full of high fructose corn syrup and nothing else that's great for you. Why have that when our dip tastes great, is a wonderful source of fat and ... is an easy way to get kiddos to eat their veggies! Why does dip instantly make anything more fun?
Cabbage Slaw
Cabbage slaw or coleslaw should be considered a super food. Purple cabbage, in particular, is packed with six times more vitamin C than green cabbage. By combining purple cabbage with the healthy fats from mayo (here's our homemade mayo recipe) or olive oil, you make the fat-soluble vitamins A and K in the cabbage and carrots more absorbable.
So what sounds good to you? What will you be making for the long holiday weekend? For more ideas check out our full recipe section where you'll find crowd favorites such as our Crunchy Broccoli Salad and Mediterranean Potato Salad.
One more thing, while you can control what you contribute to the potluck table you can't control what others will bring. With that in mind our nutritionists and dietitians share ideas on how to navigate the party and what they do before even leaving the house.
Thanks for reading. We hope you have a wonderful 4th of July!
